With more than 35 years experience in various avenues of sewing, including interior décor and dressmaking, I started a small factory manufacturing clothing for a couple of local designers. As demands increased, I needed assistance if I was to keep the orders rolling out on time. This was cause for concern, as my quality expectations are huge, and I needed machinists who could meet the high standards to which my clients were accustomed. I needn’t have worried, as we now have a very happy workshop staff, who are all extremely capable and suitably qualified.
While chatting to my sister, who is somewhat of a fitness fanatic, I mentioned that it would be good to get a range of clothing designed and available online. Her immediate response was very enthusiastic and she suggested a range of activewear, as there was a limit to what was readily available in terms of stylish affordablility as well as garments being durable & comfortable. This sounded like a great challenge – designing and manufacturing a range of attractive, comfy, everyday clothing which is also affordable and easily accessible – online!
Fortunately, I never do anything in half-measures. Soon I was scanning the internet for suppliers of good quality fabrics & threads. Putting pencil to paper designing the simple, yet stylish clothing which make up the Act’v8! clothing range, was the next step to realizing this goal. Many, many hours later we are up and running, offering some wonderfully comfortable & figure-defining garments.
The added edge which Act’v8! clothing offers you is the ability to order customized clothing. To do this, you are able to select a basic design from the Act’v8! clothing range, deciding what colours & fabrics you prefer. And all of this can be done right here, online, anytime, anywhere – browsing at your leisure.
Natural fibres are used as far as possible, with just a touch of man-made fibre for added comfort. Fabrics used in our wonderfully comfy active- and leisurewear ranges include natural fibres such as cotton, viscose & linen, with some Act’v8! garments requiring just a tad of spandex (5%) to ensure ease of movement. Most of the fabrics which are used for Act’v8! garments are manufactured in South Africa. Threads & labels are all manufactured in South Africa.
Tags are printed locally on recycled paper to our specifications. Invoicing & orders are all processed via email, thereby further reducing paper requirements.
The Act’v8! factory premises are run from the property on which we live. This is a small-holding on the western outskirts of Port Elizabeth, situated on the South-Eastern Coast of South Africa. Tea & lunch breaks are spent airing our heads and stretching our limbs in the wonderful, fresh country air and surrounding, expansive gardens.
The intimate factory is fully kitted out with machinery operated by amazing women who are dedicated to producing top quality garments. Act’v8! seamstresses are well equipped for production of this nature, with various qualifications and loads of experience in dress design, cutting, pattern making & of course sewing! We have successfully managed to maintain a sense of “home industry” with a professional touch & top quality results. The atmosphere at the Act’v8! factory is cheerful and friendly with a swish of urgency to ensure orders are rolled out timeously. All in all, it is a wonderful way to spend an active working day, ensuring the top quality we offer you in all Act’v8! garments!
Act’v8! Garment Care
All Act’v8! garments are machine-washable, but should not be tumble-dried. Although Act’v8! products are colour-fast, dark colours should always be washed separately from lights & whites to avoid any unforeseen mishaps! To reduce fading, turn garment inside out for washing & drying. For further protection and to ensure maximum life of your Act’v8! garment, avoid drying garments in direct sunlight.
Act’v8! In The Community
So many in need, so many resources available, so many opportunities to help, so little effort required. We have so many off-cuts of fabric each week which are of little or no use in the manufacturing of our garments, but have a whole lot of other uses.
This is how we Act’v8! our ‘waste’:
Larger off-cuts are donated to local outreach programs where they are useful for stitching together into blankets and other warm goodies which in turn are distributed to those less fortunate.
Smaller off-cuts of fabric are stitched together into strips and joined together until we have large enough pieces to make into dog blankets. Some are filled with the really little scraps to make dog cushions. These are donated to one of our local animal shelters – Save-a-Pet.
Some bits and pieces are put aside and made into bandanas and donated to various cancer support groups who in turn supply cancer patients with these free of charge.
Our chosen charities are ‘Save a Pet’ and ‘Lake Farm Center’. Please click on their logos below to visit their websites.
